At long last the House will take up the Farm Bill (HR 1947
) this afternoon, with final votes as soon as Thursday.
Time to pick up that phone…again. House leadership have been counting votes and rumor has it that they are close to the 218 required for passage.
NOW is the time to call your representative(s)
and ask them to vote for the five year Farm Bill; the capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121. Feel free to share this fact sheet
with them or personalize it for your own use.
There is varying speculation about when it might come to a vote but a vigorous discussion is certainly anticipated. Generally speaking, there has been little concern expressed about the easement programs but we shouldn't take anything for granted; the House is a different beast than the Senate. The last vote in the House this week is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, so if it’s not a done deal at that point, they start again the next week. However, Chairman Lucas (R-OK) believes they can get it done in two days.
The House Rules Committee released over 200 amendments that had been filed by Monday afternoon. Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) has offered an amendment to allow land trusts to hold
Forest Legacy easements. We believe this option would make the Forest Legacy Program even more cost-effective from both the federal and state perspective. Read our letter of support
Here’s an unrelated tidbit for you that I thought you might be interested in: a new online tool
, called COMET-FARM, enables agricultural producers to calculate how much carbon their conservation actions can remove from the atmosphere. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the free tool in a June 5 address to the National Press Club in Washington, where he outlined a vision for modern solutions to environmental challenges.
