Your personal calls and emails are working -- the Farm Bill conferees are paying attention to the pressure, so keep up the good work! This pressure breathed new life into the cost-share waiver last week and locked in formal support from Senators Max Baucus (D-MT) and Tom Harkin (D-IA). Both voiced their support before a meeting of their 38 fellow conferees and were joined by Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA). Unfortunately, the conferees were not able to reach an agreement prior to adjourning for the Thanksgiving recess, making final passage of the Farm Bill before the end of the year complicated given the limited time left in the Congressional calendar. There is only a short window of opportunity remaining: the House meets again on Dec. 2 and is scheduled to adjourn for the rest of the year on Dec. 13.
However, the four principal negotiators met last night via conference call to keep the discussion active over the break. This means there is still time to lock in your Members of Congress as supporters of the cost-share waiver. Use the Capitol switchboard number (202-224-3121) to call your Members of Congress and ask them to express their support to House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK) and Ranking Member Collin Peterson (D-MN) -- most urgently, they need to hear from their Republican colleagues.
