Happy Thanksgiving! With just one month remaining to save the conservation tax incentive, we're eager to celebrate three new developments that give hope for a happy new year.
First, we are thankful to Senate Finance Committee members Ron Wyden (D-OR) and John Thune (R-SD) for sending a letter to Chairman Max Baucus and Ranking Republican Orrin Hatch, opposing new limitations to the charitable deduction. All charities, and particularly those accepting large donations of land, could be greatly harmed by tax reform options outlined in a new CBO report. These include capping deductions at 6% of the donor's income, only allowing deductions exceeding 2% of the donor's income, and the President’s proposal to limit deduction benefits to 28%. The Wyden/Thune letter is a big step forward in defending the charitable deduction.
Second, we are thankful to the sixteen senators and representatives who have co-sponsored legislation to make the conservation tax incentive permanent over the past two months. Please join us in thanking them and any from your area:
- Senator Chris Coons (D-DE)
- Senator Angus King (I-ME)
- Rep. Susan Davis (D-CA)
- Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL)
- Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL)
- Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL)
- Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL)
- Rep. Todd Young (R-IN)
- Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY)
- Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC)
- Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX)
- Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX)
- Rep. Gene Green (D-TX)
- Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX)
- Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-WA)
- Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA)
Last, but not least, we are thankful for YOU. Over the past few weeks, we've been blown away by the 160 land trust leaders who joined us for a conference call, coalition partners who pulled out all the stops to prepare letters to the Hill, and advocates in key districts who have flown to DC or arranged in-district contact. We at the Land Trust Alliance can tell Members of Congress about land trust policy priorities, but only YOU can make them care. Thank you.
If you want to get in the spirit of saying thanks, check out our "dozen ways to say thank you."
Thanks to everyone for all your help.
P.S. – This email list is for land trust leaders that are interested in tax incentives for conservation. Please let me know if there others at your organization or its partners who would like to subscribe.
