Dear ,
Federal law requires every land trust holding conservation
easements to have the financial resources to monitor and defend those easements.
With litigation costs in some cases exceeding $300,000, many land trusts have
asked the Alliance to investigate the availability of insurance to cover those
costs. We listened to your concerns and hired an independent insurance consultant
to evaluate alternatives.
See the blurb below for more information on
conservation defense insurance, and if you are coming to Rally you can learn more
and give us your feedback.

| Development
Threatens Nebraska; Landowners Fight Back | The Schramm Bluffs region between Omaha and Lincoln
borders the Platte River and is home to several threatened and endangered species,
as well as numerous Native American archaeological sites.
Development
in this fastest growing county in Nebraska could fragment this historically and
ecologically valuable land, but the Nebraska Environmental Trust, Nebraska Land
Trust, and a group of landowners are doing their part to make sure this land stays
intact. More

New Form 990 Instructions |
The IRS has released revised instructions for the redesigned Form 990 for the
2008 tax year, along with additional background documents to help nonprofits make
the transition to the new form. Adjustments were made in several areas, including
narrowing the definition of "key employee" and the standard for determining independence
of board members. The new form consists of an 11-page, 11-part core form and related
schedules. Schedule D contains revised reporting requirements for conservation
easements. More

| Report Released
on Feasibility of Conservation Defense Insurance | The consulting firm hired to evaluate conservation defense
insurance has issued a report concluding that insurance might be viable if at
least 12,000 conservation easements are enrolled in a group program within the
first four years. The report is based on the findings of a statistical survey
of a representative cross-section of Alliance members that hold land or easements.
Attend Rally workshop C15, Upholding Conservation Permanence, at 8:30
a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21 to learn more, ask questions and comment. In the meantime
